Herbalist arrested in Ogun State for killing 16-year-old

A herbalist, Tunde Banjo, and an alfa, Nurudeen Adeniyi, have been arrested by operatives of the Ogun State Police Command for allegedly killing a 16-year-old-girl, identified only as Olayinka.

They were reportedly arrested in Ijebu Igbo, Ijebu North Local Government Area of the state.
Our correspondent gathered that the police also arrested 19-year-old Tobi Ogunkoya, who was suspected to have lured Olayinka into the hands of Banjo and Adeniyi.
The trio were said to have been arrested by policemen from the Ago Iwoye and Ijebu Igbo divisions on Tuesday.
A source said Olayinka’s br**sts were severed by her killers.
The state acting Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, who confirmed the incident, said at about 2.30pm, one Serifat Adebanjo reported Olayinka’s abduction to the police in Ago Iwoye station, alleging that Ogunkoya was a suspect in the abduction.
Oyeyemi added that acting on the information, the police stormed a house in Imosan community and apprehended Ogunkoya, who confessed that Olayinka was in the custody of Banjo in Ijebu Igbo.
Oyeyemi, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, added that upon his arrest, Tobi took policemen to the home of Banjo in Ijebu Igbo, where they met him with the Alfa, and they were arrested.
He said two fresh human hearts and a live tortoise were allegedly found in their possession.
Oyeyemi said Banjo onfessed to the police that the girl had been killed, her br**sts and other vital organs severed, while her remains were thrown into the Ogbere River, in the Ijebu East Local Government area of the state.
He said, “The Police have arrested Banjo, a herbalist, and Adeniyi, an alfa in Ijebu Igbo. Banjo said they have killed the girl and body dumped inside the Ogbere River. The police are working to retrieve the corpse. Two human hearts and one live tortoise were a recovered from the suspects.”
Oyeyemi said the suspects would be soon be transferred to the homicide section of the command’s headquarters, Eleweran, Abeokuta.

Senator Seeks Urgent Measures To Tackle Economic Recession

The senator representing Lagos-West Senatorial District on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Senator Solomon Adeola, has called for urgent measures to tackle the current economic recession in the country.
Adeola, who is the Vice-Chairman, Senate Committee on Communications, also expressed concerns that government at all levels were not treating the issue of recession with the urgency it required “to ensure that its duration is not unduly prolonged with untold suffering and even deaths for the majority of our people”.

The senator, who made this known in a statement by his Media Adviser, Mr. Kayode Odunaro, on Tuesday, however, pointed out that the recession was not peculiar to Nigeria.
He said, “The difference here is that not much is being done to assure the people that government is on top of the situation in terms of marshaling out implementable policies to address the plight of groups that are hardest hit by the continuing recession.
“I must say that one has yet to see any urgency in providing palliatives for the poor and collapsing industries and other corporate bodies leading to serious job losses and a growing sense of despair among the general population. Experience in the past shows that one of the most reliable ways to tackle recession is to spend money on the productive sector as well as welfarist spending to put money in the pockets of the poor”.

What Nigeria Can Do To Come Out Of Recession – Agbakoba

A former President of the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, Olisa Agbakoba, has predicted that Nigeria will continue to wallow in economic recession for the next four years except the Federal Government takes hold of the banking sector and exert more regulatory control, among other measures.
This is just as he advised the Federal Government to return the Treasury Single Account to the commercial banks and create a new supervisory agency to monitor them, while the Central Bank of Nigeria should focus its attention on formulating monetary policies.

Mr. Agbakoba, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, expressed these views while speaking to journalists in Lagos on Tuesday on what Nigeria should do to overcome recession.
Nigeria last Wednesday officially entered recession when its Gross Democratic Product (GDP) witnessed negative growth in the second quarter for the second consecutive time.
Giving advice on how the country can come out of the recession, the senior lawyer and rights activist urged the Federal Government to return the TSA back to the commercial banks at single digit rates, he suggested 5 per cent, whilst supervising the banks.
“Limit the CBN to monetary policy and take away banking supervision to new prudential regulatory authority and banking ethics to new financial conduct authority.
“If banks focus on lending and not trading, money will flood the system for productive value”, he added.
Agbakoba, who maintained that Nigeria’s economy had already slid further from recession into depression, noted that the Federal Government did not have what could be called an economic team at the moment.
He suggested that one of the first steps that President Muhammadu Buhari should take to rescue the economy from recession was to set up an economic team comprising of experts or technocrats.
He suggested that government should engage the likes of Prof. Pat Utomi and Mr. Bismarck Rewane.
The former NBA chief stressed that the only way out of recession was for the government to pump money into the system by embarking on developmental projects rather than adopting austerity measures.
“We must spend our way out of recession”, he said. “When you go to the hospital and the doctor says you’re anemic, only one thing is done – transfusion. So, how can the government present an austerity programme?”
Mr. Agbakoba also said government must be clear as to what economic policy it wants to pursue to get the country out of its present economic challenges.
“The government must be clear as to what policy it wants to pursue. There is only one way out of recession and it is massive bouncing. You have to bounce the economy.
“Niger Delta is crying for money, South-East is crying for money, we all know that South-West is crying for money, so, you have public works to spend money on.
“You will be surprised if there’s a situation where Julius Berger and co are given contracts to build roads and you say for every contract, you must have 10 per cent labourers, you will find that the economy will slowly revive. But unfortunately, I am not seeing those things and if it doesn’t happen, we will be looking at a very long term, because a recession cycle is three years, but great economics, like the former Minister of Greece, can make it; we can recover by Q2 2017 but that requires applying the best possible method”, Agbakoba said.
He also argued that the emergency power being proposed by the Presidency was not necessary, saying all that the President needed was will power to do the right thing.

Alleged N2.3b Diversion: Ex-Minister Orubebe Gets N10m Bail

A Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court sitting in Maitama, Abuja has granted a former Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Elder Godsday Orubebe and two others bail at N50million.
The trio were arraigned before the court on Wednesday morning on a six-count charge bordering on corruption, perjury, and diversion of public funds.

The two others are Oludare Lawrence Alaba, an Assistant Director, Ministry of Niger Delta Affiars and Ephraim Tewolde Zeri, Director of Contracts in Gitto Costruzioni Generali Nigeria Limited.
They are, in the charge filed by the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission (ICPC), accused among others, of diverting about N2.3b meant for the compensation of property owners to be affected by the Federal Government’s dualisation project of Section IV of the East West Road.
Orubebe and others pleaded not guilty to the charge, following which Justice Kayode Adeniyi granted the ex-minister bail at N10m and one surety, who must be a responsible Nigerian, resident in Abuja and must show evidence of regular tax payment.
Justice Adeniyi granted Alaba and Zeri bail at N20m and one surety each, who are to be residents in Abuja.
The judge said Alaba’s surety must be an Assistant Director in any Federal Government parastatal, while Zeri’s surety must own property in Abuja and show evidence of ownership.
Justice Adeniyi who adjourned to November 10 for commencement of trial, ordered the defendants to be kept in ICPC’s custody pending when they are able to perfect their bail conditions.
It would be recalled that the case was earlier slated for hearing last week but had to be postponed till today following a domestic accident suffered by the former minister.
Mr. Orubebe, who maintains his innocence, alleged that he was unduly being persecuted, recalling that the ICPC investigated and found nothing incriminating against him about a year ago.
“My hands are clean and I did not do anything wrong throughout my tenure as Minister of Niger Delta. I want Nigerians to know that I am being unjustly persecuted and that what they are doing to me is unfair”, he said.

Mohammed, son of Former Nigerian Military President, Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, has initiated a legal battle with his ex wife, Rahma for custody of their two eldest kids.

Mohammed took the custody battle with his ex wife to a Sharia Court in Minna, Niger state and sources close to the case say they suspect foul play, saying not only was judgement allegedly carried out without Rahma and her representatives being present, but allegations are being made that the Babangidas are manipulating the case, especially since they have notable influence in the state.

There is also an allegation about threats to life being made and a police report being filed to address it. Whether it’s about the custody battle or the controversial audio that was supposedly leaked via Rahma’s Instagram page, LIB can’t confirm yet until they acquire proof.
From the documents acquired, Rahma has since replied and objected to the Sharia’s court judgement via an FCT Area court.

DSS, Police To INEC: Postpone Edo Guber Polls

As voters in Edo State warm to go to the polls to elect a new governor this Saturday, the Nigeria Police and State Security Services have called on the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to consider possible postponement of the election.
The security agencies made the call at a joint press briefing at the DSS Headquarters in Abuja on Wednesday.

According to the Force Public Relations Officer, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Don Awunah and his DSS counterpart, Tony Opuiyo, represented by Garba Abdullahi, credible intelligence available to the security agencies indicate possible terror attack during Sallah celebration, especially in Edo State.

Landlord Sends Tenants Packing For Supporting APC In Edo

Five tenants in Esan North East Local Government Area of Edo State have been evicted from their homes by their landlord for openly rooting for the All Progressives Congress (APC) to defeat the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in this Saturday’s governorship election in the state.
The landlord, whose name was given as Mr. David Agberemole, is a PDP supporter.

The tenants – Mr. Sylvester Chukwuemeka, Okosun Christiana and Ogbeide Elizabeth – who lamented the fate that befell them for supporting the APC, said they suffered untold hardship from their landlord for their political choice.
One of the tenants, Okosun Christiana, who spoke in her native dialect (Esan) said, “We don’t have any problem, just party differences, he told us he wanted everyone in the house to support PDP, because he is a member of the party, but I refused.
“I told him that I have been in APC for a very long time that even if the PDP is buying me a car I prefer to remain in the APC, and he said since that is my stand; I should consider myself evicted from his house”, she narrated.
Also speaking, another of the evicted tenants, Sylvester Chukwuemeka, revealed that his rents were up to date, adding that the action of their landlord negates the principle of fair play and justice just because they refused to support the PDP.
“I don’t understand why the landlord will just decide to drive us out of his house because we are not supporting PDP. I pay my rent regularly and this is not fair to me.
“The state government should come to our aid because I don’t know when it became a crime to support a party”.
Chukwuemeka also called on relevant authorities to come to their aid.
Meanwhile, Acting Executive Chairman of Edo State Internal Revenue Service, Barr. Emmanuel Usoh, has donated some bags of cement and money to the evicted tenants to build their own houses.

DHQ Denies Knowledge Of Salkida’s Arrest

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) on Monday denied knowledge of the whereabouts of a citizen journalist, Ahmed Salkida, declared wanted by the Nigerian Army over alleged ties with Boko Haram.
Mr. Salkida, a Nigerian based in Dubai, who has extensively covered the Boko Haram insurgency and believed to have access to the terrorist sect’s leadership, was reportedly arrested at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.

According to online reports, the journalist was arrested as he emerged from the Emirates Flight EK785 aircraft that brought him to Abuja by security agents.
There were speculations the Nigerian military carried out the arrest since declaring him wanted last month over the release of a video showing abducted Chibok schoolgirls in custody of Boko Haram.
But the Defence spokesman, Brigadier General, Rabe Abubakar said yesterday that the military has no knowledge of Salkida’s arrest.

FG Gives Approval For Recruitment Of 15,000 Nigerians Into NDLEA – Malami

The Federal Government has given approval for the recruitment of 5,000 staff in the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, in addition to 10,000 in 2017.
This was disclosed by Minister of Justice and the Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami (SAN).

Malami, who spoke at the ECOWAS ministers meeting yesterday, said there are plans by the federal government to improve the capacity of the NDLEA in relation to fighting crimes in the region.
The AGF, who urged member countries’ ministers to adopt the new ECOWAS Regional Drug Action Plan, for the year 2016-2020, noted that it provides a roadmap and working document for the ECOWAS drug control team.
Commending Nigeria’s effort to tackle drug trafficking at the national level, the ECOWAS Director in Charge of Drug Control, Sintiki Ugbe, said the Federal Government of Nigeria has demonstrated political will by approving the recruitment of workers to widen the NDLEA capacity and further develop a national drug control master plan.
“We see and applaud that kind of political commitment in the region. We also want to see the translation of political commitment into real actions”, Ugbe said.
