Boko Haram Attacks: Residents Of Borno Community Flee To Niger

Hundreds of residents of Gashigar village, a border community between Borno State and Niger Republic have fled the state to take refuge in the neighbouring country, after a series of attacks by suspected members of outlawed Islamist sect Boko Haram, which left 15 persons dead.
Both residents and security sources told journalists Sunday that the village is now deserted as there have been several attacks on it.
Some of the residents of Gashigar, a fishing community that shares boundary with villages in Niger Republic said seven persons were killed while over 60 shops and eight vehicles were razed during an attack by gunmen on Thursday night.
The villagers have complained that their cases were made worse by the absence of security agents in the community.
Confirming the attack, Public Relations Officer of the Borno State Police Command, Gideon Jibrin, however debunked the villagers’ claim that there was no police presence in their area.
“It is not correct that we don’t have police formation in Mobbar Local Government and surrounding villages. If their claim is true, then how come we are confirming the incident to you? The report got to the table of our state commissioner of police within the shortest possible time after it took place,” he said.
He added that apart from the seven persons that were killed, “three others who were running out of fear got drowned in the river.”
The attack on Gashigar came about four days after a similar one was made on two neighbouring villages where the insurgents were believed to have attacked and killed five persons.
An eyewitness, Alhaji Talba Gashigar, former vice-chairman of Mobbar Local Government Area, told journalists that during last Thursday’s attack, the gunmen began shooting sporadically and setting shops and vehicles ablaze.
“Some gunmen invaded our town, driving three vehicles and many motorcycles. They drove straight to the market area and began shooting and setting shops ablaze. About eight cars were also burnt.
“We had to flee for our dear lives because the gunmen came in troops and there were no security personnel in our locality. We ran across the borders into the Camerounian villages but seven of our fellow villagers were shot dead; and over 60 houses and shops were also burnt down completely.
“They spent about two hours operating in the town. Unfortunately, our town has no security operative to protect us. We are in a state of fear and confusion now; we cannot sleep in the villages here on the Nigerian side. Once dusk begins to set in, everyone locks up and crosses the borders to Diffa. Most of us board our canoes and cross over the river boundary and passed the night in Diffa,” Gashigar said.

Adamu Mu'azu becomes the new PDP National Chairman

A former Governor of Bauchi State, Alhaji Adamu Mu’azu, has been chosen as the new Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party by President Goodluck Jonathan and governors.

He will replace the former chairman, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, who resigned from his position on Wednesday.
Mu’azu was picked as a consensus candidate at a meeting between President Goodluck Jonathan and the governors of the party at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Sunday night.
The meeting ended at 1:22 am on Monday (today) morning.
Investigations showed that the governors had rejected the choice of Mohammed Wakil by the President and his wife, Patience.
Some reasons were said to have been adduced for the rejection of Wakil, a former House of Representatives Leader. The reasons included his alleged inability to carry people along when he was a principal officer of the House.
A governor told one of our correspondents after the meeting that the President was bent on picking Wakil, who had undergone screening by the security agents for a ministerial position.
The governor, who asked not to be named, said the President wanted Wakil at all costs but was vehemently opposed by the governors.
He said the meeting lasted long because it was difficult for the President to accept defeat.
The governor said, “Yes, we have picked Mu’azu. He will be presented to the members of the PDP NEC on Monday(today) for ratification.”
It was also gathered that the Governor of Bauchi State, Malla, Isa Yuguda, later agreed with the choice of Mu’azu, after his initial opposition.
Before the two meetings, the President had a private meeting with Seriake ostensibly over who would emerge as the new chairman of the PDP.
Before Sunday, a former National Publicity Secretary of the party, Prof. Rufai Alkali (Gombe State); ex-acting National Secretary, Dr. Musa Babayo (Bauchi); and a former Minister of Commerce, Amb. Idris Waziri (Taraba), were touted as some of the five top contenders for the job.
The ex-minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Mr. Ibrahim Bunu (Borno) and the current Minister of Transport, Sen. Idris Umar, who is believed to be the choice of the wife of the President Goodluck Jonathan, Patience, were also in the race.
During the meeting between Jonathan and the governors, journalists were asked to leave the venue

NNPC Must Present Proof Of How $10.8billion Was Spent - Okonjo-Iweala

The Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has said the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation needs to provide evidence that the unremitted $10.8bn has been judiciously spent.
Speaking at a dinner organised in her honour by South-East and South-South Professionals, Okonjo-Iweala made it clear that evidence needs to be provided regarding how the unremitted funds were spent.
“If the money was spent on operational costs, let us see evidence that it was spent in an authorised way. And if not, let the amount be remitted to the Federation Account,” she said.
To ensure that the issue is properly resolved, Okonjo-Iweala said the services of auditors might be required.
“I am not the auditor of the NNPC account,”
She however pointed out that it was not unusual for conflicts to arise regarding funds expected to be remitted by an agency, but that they were structures put in place specially to resolve those kinds of problems.
According to her, every month, all those involved in revenue management meet at the FAAC Committee level to review what has been paid into the Federation Account by agencies such as the Nigerian Customs Service and the Federal Inland Revenue Service. And they ask questions when figures conflict.
“I am the Coordinating Minister of the Economy; not the superintending minister… I cannot do the job of the NNPC.”
She, however, said apart from ensuring that all Federal Executive Council members did not work at cross-purpose, her job involved ensuring that every amount that should get to the Federation Account was remitted.
Okonjo-Iweala also said the government was working to boost the non-oil revenue to compensate for revenue short falls as a result of sectoral incentives provided to encourage local production.
Meanwhile, the Governor, Central Bank of Nigeria, Mr. Lamido Sanusi, has said the NNPC has no right to retain $10.8bn in income, which has contributed to a drop in savings and exposed the nation to possible price shocks.

I’ve Shamed My Critics – Aviation Minister, Stella Oduah

Aviation Minister, Princess Stella Oduah, has explained why a handful of detractors remains unrelenting in the criticisms of her and the aviation industry.
The minister lamented in Abuja yesterday that apart  from the political side to her travails, “entrenched interests in the aviation sector which have been ripping off the sector in the past 38 years and held the sector and stifling its development” were behind orchestrated attempts to disparage her.
Oduah, who sounded defiant, made it clear that she would not abandon the transformation agenda she was vigorously pursuing in the aviation sector because of the antics of her traducers so that Nigerians could derive maximum benefits from her struggle.
The minister’s words:”For the over 38 years that our airports were a damning commentary on our status as part of the civilised world; or when our airspace existed without the requisite navigational facilities to make the airspace safe; these category of persons saw no evil and heard no evil while they happily clapped their ways to the banks.
“This group has carried on with bitter venom, throwing decency and honour overboard, lying and misleading the Nigerian populace even when they know the truth because my team and I changed the game in favour of Nigeria attaining her pride of place in the comity of nations.
“For this category, that is the entrenched, corrupt and profligate individuals and entities who have caused the serious rot in the aviation sector, I owe no apologies.
“All I owe them is to further inform them that the current generation has seen through them and are no longer willing to tolerate their antics.”
Preferring not to comment on the controversial armoured cars saga, Oduah said the transformation agenda of President Goodluck Jonathan had changed the ways of doing things significantly in the country as  the president recognised the infrastructural deficit in the nation and taken very bold steps to address them in order to bequeath to the next generation a nation that can compete favourably in the comity of nations and imbue our next generation with pride and patriotism.
She said, “The massive investment and the aggressive prosecution of this agenda  in this regard have seen the aviation sector being transformed. Today,  22 airports owned by the Federal Government are at various stages of becoming decent and world class terminals.
”Nigeria’s airspace has become one of the safest in the world with the deployment of modern navigational equipments and infrastructures. The oversight capacity of the whole sector has been strengthened with the relevant regulations  in place and the training and retraining of personnel.”

Amaechi Slams Jonathan: Your Government worse than Abacha

Guns boomed! Smoke filled the air!! People were running and screaming!!! Vehicles were vandalised!!!!...
That was the scene on Sunday as PDP-led militants disrupted a Save Rivers Movement (SRM) rally in Bori, the traditional headquarters of Ogoni and the seat of Khana Local Government Area of Rivers State.

Secretary to the State Government (SSG) George Feyii, an Ogoni; Chief of Staff, Government House, Chief Tony Okocha and many allies of Governor Rotimi Amaechi were caught up in the violence. Their vehicles were riddled with bullets while the police looked away.
The governor, alarmed at the scale of the violence, described President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration as worse than that of the late dictator, General Sani Abacha. He said Jonathan is now desperate...
Two persons were shot dead by the rampaging militants, who started shooting from 4:00am at the venue of the SRM rally — the All Saints’ Anglican Church, Bori, not far from the State Polytechnic, Bori-Ogoni.
The militants’ attack came exactly one week after the SRM’s rally billed for the Rivers State College of Arts and Science, Port Harcourt was disrupted by the police, with a senator from Rivers, Magnus Abe, shot in the chest. He is still recuperating in a London hospital.
Gov. Amaechi, who is also the Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), later in an interview at the Government House, after inspecting the shot and vandalised vehicles at 4:45pm, also accused the Federal Government of desperation over the 2015 elections.
Amaechi said Jonathan wants to win the 2015 at all costs, even if people die.
The police, however, protected a group in support of President Jonathan, Grassroots Development Initiative (GDI) who held a rally at Degema Local Government Area in the same Rivers State.
Amaechi however said the disrupted Bori rally will hold this coming Saturday and he promised to attend.

Wicked Mother: Woman Kills Two Of Her Children Trying To Defeat Demons

A mother from Maryland, USA, stabbed two of her children to death and wounded two others while attempting an exorcism, authorities said.
Zakieya L. Avery, 28, was charged Saturday with two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of attempted first-degree murder, Montgomery County Police said in a statement.
A second woman, who was briefly hospitalized after the incident, was also charged in the two deaths. Police believe she is not related to the family, but lived at the same residence in Germantown.
Norell Harris, 1, and his sister, Zyana Harris, 2, suffered fatal stab wounds while their siblings, aged 5 and 8, were hospitalized with injuries, authorities said.
"Cases like this are heartbreaking," county Police Chief Tom Manger said. "Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the victims."
Police said they found the four children Friday morning after a neighbor called 911 to report suspicious activity at the home. The neighbor reported seeing a car with a door open and a knife next to it.
Exorcism is a ritual aimed at defeating purported evil spirits or demons. Authorities did not provide additional details on why they suspected exorcism.
"Investigators have learned that the two defendants believed that they were performing an exorcism. The investigation into this motive and other aspects of the crime continue at this point," police said.
Police were called to the house Thursday over reports of an unattended child in a car. By the time they got there, the child was not in the car and no one came to the door, authorities said.
"Prior to officers arriving, two women exited the townhouse, retrieved the child and re-entered the home," Montgomery County Police said. "Officers attempted to speak with the residents, but received no response at the door."
After the neighbor’s call, authorities notified county child protective services and asked them to follow up. It’s unclear whether they did. Both women are being held without bond. Information on their attorneys was not immediately available.
